Cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute

DAI LogoDAI LogoThe addition to the GPIA's title: “Research Unit of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI)” officially expresses what had been the de facto situation for many years: an intensive cooperation between the two institutions. The DAI had been sending Assistants to Amman for over 20 years, and now sends them also to Jerusalem. Researchers from the GPIA and the DAI have been working together successfully in Gadara/Umm Qais since the 1980s. Projects run by the Orient Department of the DAI in Berlin, such as the excavations in Hujayrat al-Ghuzlan near Aqaba or the survey in the Eastern Desert are also supported logistically by the GPIA, as the DAI has no branch in Jordan. The GPIA in Amman has also been helpful in maintaining contact with Iraqi colleagues in Baghdad, where the DAI branch has been unoccupied for some years. In addition to the advantages for research of the cooperation between the GPIA and the DAI, the arrangement also carries economic benefits: with the DAI, the GPIA is now permanently financially supported by the German Federal Foreign Office, which is a substantial contribution to the financial security of the institute and its work.
