Scholarship funded by the German Protestant Church
The Course Programme of the GPIA was established by the first of the institute's directors, Gustaf Dalman, in 1903. It serves to introduce its participants to the methods and results of archaeological research and the geography and culture of the Holy Land and the Levant.
The Course Programme is especially aimed at young Protestant theologians and to a lesser extent at graduates of theology, archaeology and classical studies in general. The German Protestant Church offers six scholarships a year to cover the costs of participation.
Structure of the Course Programme
The programme consists of a choice between several modules. The subjects change annually.
- Module 1: A four-day event in Berlin (obligatory).
- Module 2: A two-week excavation summer school on Tall Zirā‘a in Jordan (since 2004 in cooperation with the Biblical Archaeological Institute Wuppertal)
- Module 3: A two-week tour of the Holy Land with a particular theme
- Module 4: A four-week tour of the Near East (excavations, museums, landscapes).
It is intended that participants also gain an insight into modern life in the countries they visit. To this end, they also visit parishes, embassies, foundations and universities under the leadership of institute directors.
The Course Programme is held in German. The fee is currently € 1200 for participation in all modules.
