Research and education

The history of the German Protestant Institute for Antiquities of the Holy Land (DEI) dates back to the 19th century. Despite deep crises during the two world wars, today it has matured into a lively institute with scientific excavations and diverse projects. These include the exploration of Tall Zira’a and the associated landscape archaeology “Gadara Region Project” as well as the archaeological park under the Church of the Redeemer. The old excavation under the Church of the Redeemer has become a showcase for the DEI’s activities in Jerusalem under the motto “Through the ages” and attracts thousands of visitors every year. A new excavation is currently underway on Mount Zion to explore the area around the Essen Gate and the Old Testament city of Israel’s royal era.
